My One Year Blog Anniversary - Day 6

Had a busy day today. I actually got up early and went to church because choir was singing one last time before summer break. Services have moved to 8:30 a.m. for summer and I really like the 10:00 time that goes from Sept. to May a lot better. Sorry, but I am just not a morning person. I even find it hard to sing in the morning but boy! am I warmed up by 9:00 at night. :-)
So, what else happened today. Well, I cut all the strips for that Old Red Barn Quilt-Along project and then was at the computer when the doorbell rang. It was a surprise as it was my friend, Barb. Actually, I knew the doorbell was going to ring as I heard a motorcycle in the driveway and knew someone was here but it was still a surprise to see her. And then she handed me this...........

for my birthday!! It's a book about tea and I'll tell you more about it when it's time for tea on Wednesday. I've peeked at it and then put the bow back on as it looks so pretty with the tulle and that flower tucked in the bow. Thanks, Barb!!
Barb is not a quilting friend. No, Barb, and I are just long-time friends. I guess that makes her an antique friend!! We met when we were both working at an elementary school as Title I Aides (helping kids with reading and math skills). Plus her girls and my son were all in school together and involved in band so we had the "kids in common" and "work in common" friendship but we have stuck together for the "we enjoy each other's company a lot" friendship. I told you I have really great friends. :-)

With the skies darkening with a threat of rain, Barb and husband, Tom, decided they better get on the road. Nobody wants to make a good motorcycle ride in the rain!! Interestingly they left at about 4:00 p.m. and it took til almost 9:00 tonight before we ever got the rain that we need so much.
But alas, you don't care if we got rain but I'll bet you want to know what's in store for today's giveaway. And it's not these vintage feedsacks, although they were in the drawer with the fabrics I pulled for the giveaway so thought I would take a photo.

These are the only two vintage feedsacks that I own. I bought them in a gift basket of vintage sewing items at the Chaska Quilter's Penny Auction. There were three bags in the basket but one was unstitched and these two are still sewn together as bags. I was so surprised at the Hawaiin print. I love the white bows on the turgoise and one day, I may cut that one apart and use it in a project. The Hawaiin print one will stay "as is".
I chose to do a "vintage theme" today as here in the states this day is when Memorial Day began although it was originally called Decoration Day (for decorating the headstones at the cemetary). This day made me think of my Grandma as I remember going along with her to place flowers on her parents graves and then there would be the wreath ceremony at the river bridge. Thoughts of Grandma and the church ladies and my parents in the 1950's put me in a vintage mood. And so, here is what I gathered together for one lucky winner.............

Brown Bear is ably assisting and even has buttons in his pockets in order to keep all these things together for you to see. First, there is the tiny little "laundry-type" basket (it would make a great little pincushion!) that is filled with vintage fabrics. There are nine fabric pieces of varying sizes and then at each basket handle there are two 1-1/2 yard pieces of red and blue cotton rick rack. I added three spools of thread, five cards of vintage buttons, and then draped over Brown Bear's knee is a one yard piece of a favorite red and white cotton fabric that isn't vintage but it makes me think it's vintage. :-) And just like in all the other anniversary giveaways, there is a Mary E notebook where you can tally your quilts and projects and keep track of your friends. I like the saying on the front of this notebook....."A Friend is someone who knows all about you but loves you anyway." And that would be Barb. I have been friends with Barb longer than any of my quilty, crafty friends so I think we are stuck together as friends for life. :-)
Time for you to add a comment if you'd like to win this prize. I'm going to give you a choice on this one..........You can leave a comment and tell me about a good friend .....or.......tell me what type of fabrics you like (vintage, Civil War prints, 30's prints, Amy Butler, etc. etc. etc. ). And remember to be sure to leave your e-mail address if there is no link back to your blog.
Have a good night!!
Sandi
P.S. Next on the agenda is posting of the Seasons blocks and the Snowman blocks for June. They will both be posted by tomorrow morning.

I lost my best friend 7 years ago. Best friends are something that can't be replaced.

I love all fabrics....just depends on what mood strikes me.

I have so many quilting friends that it would be hard to choose one to mention. So I will tell you about the fabrics I like. I love them all!!!!! Civil War, brights, etc. I don't think I prefer one more than the other. You can probably tell that by my stash. lol

Jocelyn said...

I love my best friend 4 1/2 years ago. I agree with Dayna, you can never replace your best friend. She was the type of person that loved you unconditionally. I really really miss her.

Sandi, how do you keep coming up with these fabulous gift collections? Each one as precious as the next.

I love all the fabrics you mentioned but my favorite has to be vintage. Not only are they hard to come by but the designs are just so precious. Maybe it is because I grew up wearing vintage and feedsack dresses but they just draw me in.

I am currently making quilts from 30's repro and civil war fabrics. I don't have enough vintage to do a whole quilt but sneak a piece or two in whenever I do a scrappy quilt.

Again, congratulations on your blogiversary and wishing you a Happy Birthday as well!!!

I'm afraid that I love all kinds of fabric. I have a collection of vintage fabric but also like roses, brights, blues, black & white and oriental. They each have a purpose or are suited to a different project or different person. I just love them all.

My very best friend accepts me as I am, all the good and the bad things about me. I love all sorts of fabric as long as it is colorful.

Brown Bear has been doing such a good job this week :)

I love fabric! I change my mind on a regular basis as to my favorite style of fabric though. I've been seeing lots of polka dots lately. I like them in the bright colors.

Hello,

I know my best friends since 1978 and they mean more to me than my family, as they always were to me and supported me throughout. Yes, I can say I belong to the family. I have 4 children to the world and grow up and see me today they integrate into their family. I am simply family! Through my friend I could go through some hard times without going to go under.

Greeting and wish a Blessed Pentecost

Hi Sandi
One of my best friends lives miles away (half way across Australia) but we keep in contact via email and phone.
I like a wide range of fabrics, but I love authentic Japanese fabrics as well as most blue fabrics, as that is my favourite colour!

I met my best friend on-line. When we decided to move to ND one of the ladies in the AOL quilt chat room said that she knew of a chatter who lived in ND. Rochelle and I finally hooked up in chat and then through TONS of e-mails. Once we moved here we met for lunch and have been best buds ever since....10 years now.

My favorite fabric is.....all of them, well except homespun and kona solids.

I love florals AND batiks and seem to have a good-sized collection of both (with intentions of doing a nice-sized quilt with each collection....SOMEDAY!!!) Another very nice giveaway package from you! I'm glad you had a nice visit with your friend yesterday...going today to see a friend of mine for more than 25 years in NJ. "Antique" friends are great, aren't they?

I have two friends from 4th grade and this year we are celebrating our 50th high school reunion. That's longer than I know my husband. They are both partners in crime - one is a quilter and one can't sit still long enough to quilt.

I like all fabrics but what I drawn to are Batiks and Cat themed fabrics. I love the colors of the batiks. Cat fabrics, well, I love cats and can't seem to get enough cat fabrics. I have a big plastic tub full of them and one day I do plan to make a big quilt with them.

Sandi, another awesome give-a-way. Its much more exciting to do some each day, the anticipating is fun. I know my Friend Phyllis for 56 years. We met in HS and have been best friends ever since. She and my son & his family are really the things I miss most by moving to Delaware. Guess what--she's coming. Her house is on the market and when it sells, she and her Hubby are moving here to PotNets. Joe and my DH Larry are close as they both were on the Fire Dept together. It has been a wonderful relationship for all! Everyone should have a friend like Phyllis

Any bright cheerful fabrics are what I like, so our summer vacation up in NH is also my favorite fabric shopping trip. This year I am going to spend some serious time at Keepsake Quilting and stock up on some small cuts of nice fabric.

The friend I've had the longest lives all the way across the country and we usually only exchange Christmas cards. But on the rare occasion that we talk, it's like no time has passed at all. It's nice to have friends like that.

I love Amy Butler fabrics - they make me smile!! My best friend is one I first met when we moved to Texas 30 years ago. I thought I would never find a friend like the ones I grew up with in Minnesota but I was wrong. Lucy is truly a dear and antique friend!

As you know...I love fabric...everything but batiks...just can't get into those.

My friend Kathy and I have been friends since we were 5. We moved into our "big house" that year and Kathy and I started first grade together and we have been friends since. She lives in Colorado, but her son and daughter live here in Oregon, so I see her once or twice a year, but we talk all the time. It's amazing that after 50 years of friendship, it seems like only yesterday we became friends.

Good MOrning! My favorite cotton fabrics are the 1930's feedsack prints AND the 1930's reproduction prints. I own a few feedsacks, but so far have never cut into one. I've a fair collection of 30's repros and even thought about doing the Old Red Barn Quilt-along with them, but with Romantics instead. My problem is that I love ALL fabric, cottons & fancies, so, as some of you might have seen on my blog or Flickr pix, I have a huge stash which I seem to continually add to.........

I love anything vintage including fabric, clothing, furniture and even people! Vintage rules!

But then I also like 1930's, followed closely by Civil War. Can't say I'm too fond of batiks but I like looking at it because it reminds me of the 60's.

Oh shoot, I love it all!

Oh those feedbags sure bring back memories! I grew up on a farm and it was so much fun waiting to see what pattern would be on the feedbags! Most of the time, they turned into pillow cases(wonder where they are now?) but I remember having a dress made from one and a skirt, also. The farm was a long time ago...do they still have patterns on feedbags?

I have a wonderful friend Cindy with whom I love to have "Stitch N Bitch" sessions as she calls them. We send the husbands to the movies or the hardware store and we sew to our hearts' content.

She was a godsend to me at our wedding. Besides being my matron of honor, she stayed up til 4:30am putting her finishing touches on my gown. She missed her calling and should be designing gowns or costumes.

She is my dear friend whom I now also call sister (in-law).

Thank you for your wonderful drawings and sharing!

(Cindy & I share in an obsession for fabric of any kind. We are both fortunate to have indulgent husbands who allow us this passion.)

Yet another great giveaway - thanks! I have an excellent friend whom I've known for 25 years. We live in different countries but I know all I have to do is email or call and she'll be praying for me and helping out any way she can. As for fabric, I love Amy Butler and having two little girls, anything matryoshka, animal or toadstools/mushrooms is popular too.

My favourite type of fabric is bright pattern or anything paisley. Both of these I have a hard time leaving behind in a quilt store. Kaffe Fassett fabric is heavenly to me. That said, I am starting to be attracted to the shades of civil war era fabrics and the possibilities of blending it with other styles of fabric. Vintage makes me so happy! And batiks and stripes and polka dots. I could go on.....Thanks for the chance to win today. Have I mentioned how generous you are!

First, good wishes for your birthday and for a whole year of blogging.

I wrote about my best quilty friend during an earlier comment, but my best overall friend is my DH of 37 years. The best thing about that is that he still considers me his best friend. His major faults are that he doesn't quilt and that he likes to watch science fiction or war stories on television. Watch out for the science fiction wars!

My favorite fabrics are the ones that I see and can immediately envision in an upcoming project or paired with another fabric I love. The value of a fabric to me is always in what I can do it.

My fabric fabrics are homespuns, then civil war, then reproductions, etc. Kansas Troubles fabrics are great.
