Gas Station Dolls!

I'm still on last weekend and the visit with my mom.......I always bring lots of bags with me full of projects and then I shop while I'm there so I end up with lots of bags to keep track of and at some point one of my bags from the thrift shop got tucked behind my suitcase. I discovered it late last Saturday night and here's what was in it........

Red Riding Hood!

Scarlett O'Hara!

and the Coronation Doll!!

I bought them for my mom and paid just $7.00 for all three of them. She has always loved dolls - so do I - and these were in such good condition that I knew she'd like them. When I took them out of the bag, she said "oh, those look like gas station dolls that you used to get when you'd fill your car with gas." All I remember getting with gas purchases was free glasses at Holiday and that was many years ago!! LOL! Anyway, I have a couple of these dolls from when I was a kid and they were old then and didn't have their original clothes so I made clothes for them. These dolls are in their original outfits complete with the staples that hold them in place. I'm guessing the Coronation Doll is in celebration of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth. Red Riding Hood never looked so fine as she does in that red polka dot dress. The little doll is not the cutest but her dotted swiss dress just made me think of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind!! There are no markings on the dolls so I have no clue to their manufacture. They just called my name when I saw them on the shelf. ;-) That's the last of the items I found at the Country Peddlar Thrift Shop in Algona, Iowa.
I've been on the computer a lot today so time to close the door on it. Had lots of new members join my Wooly Buddies group. If you like working with wool or want to learn more about it, click on the Tulip Penny Rug on my sidebar and it will take you to the homepage for Wooly Buddies. It's a fun group!!
Back tomorrow night.....

How nice that you got those dolls for your mom. I don't recall gas stations doing doll giveaways, either. So maybe I'm too "young" to remember this or maybe it was only done in other regions of the country.

Very cool dolls, I'm surprised that the fabric in the dresses hadn't fallen apart. We only got green stamps at our gas stations.

I know nothing about gas station dolls. Didn't even know about gas stations as a child. I do, however know those dolls. My dear Grandma was a seamstress and created so many things. One of them was these precious dolls. We loved them. I had all the different countries and holidays......
Later, when we graduated to Barbie, she made tons of Barbie clothes.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane.....
we did save green stamps and got so many things with them.

My favorite is the red riding hood. That is the story my mom would read over and over to Chelsey when she was little. My mom was so patient with Chelsey and she was a very demanding child. When my mom died Chelsey got the doll my mom had that she would use to tell the story. Shelbie made Chelsey a knitted red cape, too. I had a bride doll that was my pride and joy when I was about 8. It had the same face as the red riding hood doll - or very similar. I wish I knew what happened to that doll. But again, when my parents moved to Utah in 1974, everything pretty much got thrown out that wasn't essential
:-(.

The dolls are lovely though. My MIL has a huge collection of many different dolls.

I've been searching for the 8" Duchess dolls and discovered they were also called gas station dolls. Found your blog and was entranced by your mother daughter dresses. Reminded me of my pictures. Do you know where I can buy the gas station dolls?

Thanks,

There is only one gas station I know of that did this and it's because my daddy, God rest his soul, bought them for me when I was a young girl. It was the Atlantic Richfield Gas station, ARCO and they're called,"12 Beautiful Dolls of the World". But you're Red Riding Hood doll is from Blue Bonnet Margarine's promotion going on around this same time, 60's-70's. They had 3 different collections and she's from their "Storybook Dolls" collection. I've been researching this type of doll for several years now and I could go on, but it would take up a lot of space! I wish I could put a picture here, but I don't see a way to do that. I have several of these collections myself.

Oh, I forgot to mention, Red Riding Hood originally came with a little wicker basket of fruit!

The yellow one you call Scarlett is a "Hollywood Doll" Look at her back she should have a mark in the shape of a star with the words A Hollywood Doll. Find information about them here:https://dollreference.com/hollywood_dolls.html
