A sweet treat and a little prize.............

A week ago this past Friday, I was busy cleaning and baking because our kids were coming out for a visit. I had baked up a big batch of homemade chocolate chip cookies (a family favorite) but I wanted something special for a treat at breakfast. I decided I'd make cinnamon rolls. Memories of the big cinnamon rolls that Lucille Olson made at the L & L Cafe when I was a teen-ager made me get out her cookbook and make her rolls. I made these a couple years ago and was surprised they turned out so well. A warm cinnamon roll with melted frosting is just so good!

Now the reason I was surprised that the rolls turned out so well is that the recipe involves yeast. That's one of those ingredients that if you don't get it just right then the yeast won't rise and you will not get yummy cinnamon rolls. I evidently got it right.........water temp was perfect and the yeast was fresh and oh, did the dough rise!!!

If I do this again, I need to get a bigger mixing bowl because the recipe makes a huge batch of cinnamon rolls. So many that I rolled out the dough once........

and cut it into slices...........

and filled these pans, plus two more 10 x 13 pans. Then I let the rolls rise again.

The smell of the rolls baking was too good to be true. I let them bake til golden on the top and then let them cool before I frosted them.  I put the unfrosted pans in the freezer, took a small pan of rolls to friend, Sue, and then we ate the frosted ones.

And while the rolls were baking, a brief but intense rain shower fell and when it was over the sun came out bright as could be. I just knew there might be a rainbow, so I grabbed my camera and sure enough there was one. Actually, there are two. If you look closely on the right, you can see that it is a double rainbow!
So I was really pleased and surprised that my cinnamon rolls turned out so well, and then I was pleased and surprised that there was a rainbow...........so I thought I would please and surprise one of you with a little fabric treat from my stash. I am cleaning and sorting and found these summery fabrics. I am going to make them into the little candlemat that I designed a few years ago. I don't need all the fabric so I have a fat quarter of the floral and three fat-eighth's, plus my "Candlelight" pattern, for one lucky winner!
Just leave your name and tell me if you have ever made cinnamon rolls. Easy as pie! I'll have my random number man draw a winner on July 12th at midnight. Good luck!

  1. Hello Sandi,

Cinnamon Scrolls are a favourtie in our home. I make them in the Breadmaker. When our daughter was in New Zealand for a year, she came back for a visit half way and I had to have Cinnamon Scrolls made before I went to the Airport. As soon as she got in the car at the Airport I handed over a box with some in.
Just love rainbows, something special about them. Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

    Happy days.
    Bev.

  2. I make cinnamon rolls using my mom's recipe. I usually make two pans of regular dinner rolls and one pan of cinnamon rolls each batch. They are so yummy!! We don't add the frosting and we eat them with a Sunday dinner, not for breakfast (but they are good the next morning, too!). Your rolls look amazing!!!!

  3. Oh, my.....you make me ashamed to admit that the only cinnamon rolls that go in the oven at our house are the Pillsbury kind. :( Yours look absolutely scrumptious, though!

  5. Now I love to eat the cinnamon rolls but I have only made pre made ones.
The pans of rolls sure make me hungry for one.

  6. Yes, I've made many pans of cinnamon rolls. Making them reminds me of my mother. Love the fragrance, love the taste, and am always disappointed when I have one somewhere else--the lesson being that people who make huge gorgeous cinnamon roles and sell them usually go for looks when it's what's inside that counts!

  7. I have not made cinnamon rolls; however may have to learn. Where I lived before Florida there was a lovely Mennonite bakery and they made the cinnamon rolls, caramel cake and some of so fine cookies.

  15. I might have made cinnamon rolls years ago (can't remember), but haven't baked for years since my son became the resident baker. He often makes things with yeast and they always come out perfect! Enjoy the rest of your weekend, Sandi.

  16. Absolutely.. I've tried many different recipes over the years, but I found a recipe off 17 and baking for pull apart lemon bread.. the dough consistently comes out amazing..soft and fluffy, that I decided to try it for cinnamon rolls, and let me tell you... those were some AMMAAAZZZINNGG rolls.. the only bad part was I had made half the recipe and only had one pan and we were arguing (my sister, brother adn I ) who got the last one. So that is now my go to recipe.

  22. Confession: Cinnamon rolls are my favorite. I don't have birthday cake...I get cinnamon rolls. But working too many hours a week I have made a great discovery...Try Rhodes Frozen Cinnamon rolls. Put them out overnite and the next morning pop them in the oven...I'm not a traitor--I so admired those that make them from scratch...I'm just juggling those apples for a little quilting time;) Be sweet...

  26. I remember one of my Aunts from Norway came for a visit here in the states many years ago and made cinnamon rolls EVERY morning for us kids since she couldn't speak English but she wanted us to know she was so glad she was visiting and we were too!!!!! It was the best 3 weeks I can still smell them and that was 30 plus years ago. I think once the heat dies down I will make them to show my grandson how much I enjoy him visiting grandmom. Thanks for bringing back a nice memory. Eliz
