I cannot lie,
I had to buy,
I did not cry,
I just gave a sigh.
I don't know the details and maybe it's management of the company or maybe it's the union, I only know that Hostess was the stuff of my childhood and I hate to see it go. My mother would send me to the store for a loaf of bread or milk and I remember that it was a good day, if there was enough left for a treat. Sometimes I bought a 3-cent chocolate Lunch bar but if I was really lucky, there was enough left to buy a Hostess CupCake. I loved those chocolaty cakes and that cream filling. I seem to remember they cost about 12-cents for a package of two. Yes, I am seriously dating myself by telling you how much I paid for these things when I was a kid. I was not a Twinkies fan, though. They just had no chocolate in them so they weren't on my food pyramid. LOL! So, with news that the company would cease to exist, I had to take action! We were headed to the grocery store last Friday to get our Thanksgiving turkey and I told my husband we had to get some of these............
I got the last two boxes of CupCakes at the Cub Grocery store that we shop at. There were plenty of Twinkies left then but now I hear they are hard to find. We put the goodies in the freezer and figure we'll enjoy them at Christmas, just for fun. Now the funny thing is, though, as much as I love my cupcakes, I am sure they were fresher and more tasty when I was a kid. And that's the truth!
Now, I promised there would be a giveaway today and there will be. And sorry for anyone who thought it might be Hostess Cupcakes or Twinkies. Nope, it's gonna be fabric. But first, I have to share this gorgeous photo.....................
And then again..........I cannot tell a lie, I did not grow this gorgeous plant. Nope, it's the "green thumb" of my friend, Connie. I had to share this because it's gorgeous, but also because yesterday, blogger Kate (of By*the*Babbling*Brook blog) left a comment on yesterday's giveaway.......
"Love all those fabrics. I hope some of your lucky rubs off on me, Sandi, and I win!!!!"
I replied back to her and said "I totally understand the lucky rub. Yesterday afternoon, I rubbed the hand of my friend and our postlady, Connie, in the hopes that her "green thumb" would rub off on me. Am attaching photo of her gorgeous plants that adorn our little post office so you can see why. ;-) "
And then I thought, I must share this with my readers! I may not be lucky enough to have a "green thumb" for real plants but I do have a real touch for "growing" artificial flowers (okay, you can't really "grow" artificial flowers) and I love to work with floral fabrics. So finally, here's the scoop on another giveaway...........
Yesterday, I showed you that I was working on this tabletopper from Jacquelynne's "O Holy Night" fabric line. You can see the entire line by going here. So, I have a problem and I am seeking your advice. Notice the little green squares at the middle of the bottom of the photo.........
They are there because I need to fix a corner problem. I cut strips of the border fabric in Jacquelynne's line and sewed it around the pieced center section. I realized the corners should have been mitered. However, I don't want to rip it out, so I thought maybe I should just put a green triangle in each corner, like when one is making a Snowball block and that would make it look better. Any ideas are most welcome.
Just as I loved Hostess Cupcakes when I was a kid, I also loved the number Two. I think that's because my birthday was on the second day of the month but whatever the reason, I like the number Two and consider it my lucky number. Maybe it will be lucky for Two of you as this is what is offered for a giveaway today.................Two colorways of the poinsettia fabrics in Jacquelynne's fabrics! In addition to the four fat quarters, you'll also get some of the border fabric shown in the first photo of my "tabletopper in progress". Just leave your name and a way to contact you. And then be sure to hop over to Jacquelynne's blog......... The*Noble*Wife and say Hello! Many thanks to her for sharing her fabrics!
There will be two winners for this Giveaway day. Comments open through 8:00 p.m. on November 28th. Winners will be notified and will have two days to reply! Fabrics will be mailed out on November 30th so you'll have time to make something lovely for this Christmas!!
Have a great day!
Sandi
I really think your table topper looks more than fine the way it is. It really is lovely.
ReplyDeleteGreetings from Maine!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for hosting this giveaway...the fabric is beautiful! I think that your idea for the triangle corners will work lovely...such pretty material!
I, too, was a cupcake fan as a child...now those days are gone since being diagnosed with a gluten sensitivity. Oh, well, memories of childhood still taste sweet in our dreams...don't they!
Have a blessed Thanksgiving,
Laura
Love that fabric! I am sure I could whip up some great little Christmas gift with it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about the memory of the taste of Hostess cupcakes. I had a craving for one about 7-8 months ago, bought a box, just didn`t taste like I remembered. Maybe it is all the preservatives todays food has.
That fabric is so beatutiful and so is your table topper. May I suggest cutting 4 squares of the green that are the width of the border strips and inserting them at each corner ... each side strip would butt up against the small green square. But you are the designer so you'll make the appropriate choice.
ReplyDeleteWould you believe I've never had a twinkie or one of it's 'cousins'? No doubt that's because I grew up in rural Canada. Nowadays nothing seems to taste as good as it did when we were kids!!!!
Your topper is lovely. I think I would put the green squares in the corners. I don't say this because the way it looks now is bad....but I think you aren't totally happy with the way it looks in the corners now and the green squares should make you feel better about that. (Otherwise, it may become one of those pieces that bother you each time you look at it!) As for the Hostess products, my favorite was the cupcakes which I KNOW had more cream filling when was a child than they have now. However, we lived near a Wonder Bread factory (with an outlet store selling all the Hostess products) for about 30 years and I grew very tired of them and prefer, instead, Tastykake products....which I realize aren't available everywhere. SO.....even if Twinkies and all Hostess products disappear, I am not attempting to buy any as I lost my taste for them from having them too often with their store so nearby! LOL
ReplyDeleteI'm more of a Tasty Cake girl so the passing of Hostess cakes doesn't affect me that much. Now if they were to eliminate Butterscotch Krimpets, my world would be a sad place.
ReplyDeleteHostess may not be going out of business the judge in the bankruptcy hearing has ordered them into mediation with the baker's union before going to the extreme. I don't eat them anymore and I agree with you they just don't taste the same.
ReplyDeleteI think your table topper looks great the way it is. It would never have occurred to me that you should miter the corners.
Your table topper looks beautiful and the fabrics are beautiful. Thank you for the give away, I want to join.
ReplyDeleteMy hubby worked for Hostess for 5 years,so I guess that I have to admit to eating a few Ho-Ho's and crumb cakes!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful fabrics and thanks for the chance to sew with some.
The store was out of Twinkies, but, I got the last box of Ding Dongs. Hubby and I will share them after Thanksgiving. Yum! There goes my diet. I loved the cupcakes when I was growing up. Love the table topper. Sew cute. It's fine the way it is. Thanks for the giveaways.
ReplyDeleteWe tried to find a few cupcakes left but they must have flown out of the stores. Only Little Debbie products were available (sigh).
ReplyDeleteThe fabrics are just lovely and I love your table topper.
Great job! I love this fabrics line. Very beautiful!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty table topper. Yes it is so sad to hear of the loss of Hostess. I remember that a Twinkie was a real treat when I was growing up. It's been many years since I have tasted one, but they do bring back fond memories.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a Twinkie fan either. I preferred the chocolate cupcakes. I would very careful peel off the top of the cupcake and put it on my lunch box. Then I would eat the cupcake while looking longingly at the frosting. Once the cupcake was gone, I could savor the frosting. ;) Gotta save the best for last!
ReplyDeleteI went looking for Twinkies, but there were none left at the grocery store in our small down and I wasn't going to actually drive any distance to look for them. There are generic versions.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm sure someone will buy the brand and resurrect them.
Jacquelynne's fabric reflects her lovely inner light.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite (lucky) number is 4.
I love #2 too. My birth month. I think your topper looks great but if you are like me you will want to fix the corners.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the giveaway. Lovely fabrics.
Janet
now I want a hostess cupcake! the chocolate icing was always so good as kid today I doubt I could eat it all anymore but I could eat the cake and the filling :)
ReplyDeleteI loved the yodels too, did hostess make those too?
pretty fabrics but don't include me in the giveaway, I am trying to use the fabric I have !!!!
Kathie
Love these fabrics, thanks for hosting the giveaway. I'll be you could fix the mitered corner look by using an applique approach and tucking some of the fabric back in at and angle.
ReplyDeleteI'd leave the corners alone. I think the green triangles would take your eye away from the beautiful fabrics. Thanks for the giveaway chance again. Love those fabrics.
ReplyDeleteDoes the topper really need to have mitered corners. It looks fine as it is. The fabrics you used are so lovely. I would love to make a topper with the fabric giveaway.
ReplyDeleteDo you really need to have mitered corners. I think the topper is lovely as it is. thanks for the chance to win the fabric.
ReplyDeleteI don't really think it needs to be changed at all. I think it looks just lovely. Perhaps a button if you feel the need to add something. Maybe a felt Holly Leaf with a red button? I honestly would just leave it as it is though.
ReplyDeleteI like it the way it is, thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful photo of the yellow blossom!
ReplyDeleteJust lovely fabric in your giveaway Sandi.
Love the tabletopper.
ReplyDeleteAnd I do cry at the thought there my not be Twinkies again.... Boo hoo
I always loved finding a Twinkie in my lunch but my favorites were the chocolate cup cakes. The snowballs were great, too. I think the brands will survive, just made by another company. Hope they taste as good as the originals though!
ReplyDeleteThe fabrics are beautiful and I would love to win. Thanks for the chance!
I think the little green corners would look good but most important is do what makes you feel good about your project. Have fun with it!
I would agree with those who said to leave your table topper just as it is. It is lovely! You used Jacquelynn's fabrics to their best advantage in your design.
ReplyDeleteAs for Hostess...I am sad to see such a well-known, long-time company close. My husband was always a fan of Ding Dongs or Hostess Cupcakes. Guess he'll have to be content with the chocolate cakes I make for him!
Lovely table topper, the fabrics are wonderfully Christmasy. If the management/union can't agree to a new contract, maybe you could have a cupcake giveaway. I would still want the fabric! Thanks for the chance to win. Hope you have a great Thanksgiving.
ReplyDeleteFabric is better than cupcakes any day! Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteI think your table topper looks good the way it is!! Like Lisa says, " fabric is better than cupcakes" although I did overeat quite a few of them in my day!!! Thanks for the chance to win that beautiful fabric!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI love your table topper. Wonderful giveaway. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI had to look at the lovely table topper several times before I even noticed what you think is a mistake. So I wouldn't change anything. My Mom baked a lot, so at lunch time in school, I would trade my home made goodies for someone's Hostess treats. Thanks for the giveaway.

ReplyDeleteHostess was the mostest. I remember buying them in packs of TWO; one for me, one for a friend!
ReplyDelete"One is the loneliest number...."so of course you love TWO.
Your table topper is gorgeous as is and I want to make one just like it! Hope I win your giveaway.
No need to change a thing but if you must, try the triangles.
Your table topper is so sweet. The fabrics you used are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteIt is a shame about Hostess. I was not a big fan, but I feel sorry for the 18,000 people who have lost their jobs.
The hibiscus are such a pretty color.
I think your topper looks lovely. But if it does worry you, add the green to the corners otherwise you will always be thinking "I should have changed it". It will be gorgeous whatever you decide.
ReplyDeleteThe tabletopper is awesome! Thanks for sharing! :) Glad you got some Hostess goodies! Enjoy! ;)
ReplyDeletebeautiful table topper thanks
ReplyDeleteSo pretty! I am so glad you have hosted this giveaway.
ReplyDeleteYour top looks great and the fabrics are yummy! soparkaveataoldotcom
ReplyDeleteSandi- I think announcing that they are going out of business is the best thing that ever happened to the Hostess company! It is hard to find Twinkies around here now, ha ha! I am sure someone will buy them out, or at least buy the recipe. Personally, I don't eat Twinkies, but this whole thing reminds me of the movie Zombieland when it's the end of the world and Woody Harrelson's character is desperate to find the last existing Twinkies...
ReplyDeleteI am not a fan of Twinkies or the cupcakes. Spoiled by too much "from scratch" cooking, I think.
ReplyDeleteWhat great fabrics for the giveaway!
Lisa

thanks for the chance!
ReplyDeleteI will miss Hostess also -they were such special treats for us when we were growing up. Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteLove christmas quilted table toppers! looks great!
ReplyDeleteThe table topper is truly lovely but if you are not happy with it you will not settle till it is fixed, a green square is a good option, maybe on point so that it wraps the corner and shows as a triangle on front and back.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful topper! Thanks for the chance to win such lovely fabric.
ReplyDeleteHi!!! It is very pretty!!! The green square is pretty in the corner!!!
ReplyDeleteHello there, love the fabric! Thanks for the chances to win! awolk at rogers dot com
