I try to squeeze every last thread into one quilt or another.

Kaiser reminds me of one of my favorite memories from childhood, which was not appreciated then as much as now: When I was in grade school, my parents and I lived in a drafty old farm house, heated by a wood stove in the corner of the living room. My bed was along the bedroom wall closest to the stove. On cold nights, I would put on thick flannel pajamas made by my mother because the ones at the store were such thin flannel. She would bring in a warm towel that had hung on a chair back pulled close to the stove. That kept the cold sheet from touching me. My pillow had been sitting on that same chair. Another warm towel went over me, then she pulled across three to five quilts or blankets. Sometimes my dad's old Army blanket was in the middle of the stack because it was warm but itchy. Then she would grab the edge of the stack and pull them as tight as she could before tucking me in. The foot and wall side stayed tucked up all week to the point that I could not move until morning when the quilts had loosened enough for me to crab-slide out of bed. It sometimes felt like prison then; now the memory feels like a loving hug.

the Owl Lady Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7739974925779691361.post-89336543977900899192013-02-27T09:30:30.226-06:002013-02-27T09:30:30.226-06:00Congratulations, Diane. Using those small triangles is the "only way to fly", given the $$ of fabric and the fact everything is laying perfectly for such darlings to be stitched. Can't wait to see how this comes along!!
