Lunch at Morning Glory Bakery!

Note........be sure to read this post here first and then read on.........
So, here is where I left off in my last post.............the doors at the back of Inspiration Quilt Shop that lead into Morning Glory Bakery.  You might say this is a family venture as the bakery is owned by Nancy's daughter, Cassie. I think that shopping and lunch are just a divine combination. After all, no quilter lives by fabric alone. Actually, we often require chocolate and there was certainly some of that on the menu. :-) You can check out the menu here. The food is really, really good. Here's what I enjoyed........

That's a half and half meal........half a Smoked Turkey Panini and half an Apple Walnut Salad. It was, I repeat, so good!  Jeanie ordered the 16 Bean soup and I forget what her husband Larry ordered, but it was his dessert that looked yummy. It was some kind of Oreo concoction and he really enjoyed it. I decided to buy some cookies for later as my half portions were very filling. Serving up the good eats were owner, Cassie on the right and her sister, Jessica on the left, with Hope in the middle. The cookies I bought were a pretzel chocolate chip cookie concoction that was so good, I wished I had bought more than just two of them. :-)  I really love a good chocolate chip cookie!
There are quilts on display in the bakery, too, and this one was especially lovely...........

Jeanie's husband took a picture of the two of us and then we said our good-byes. But not before we were making plans to see each other again sometime! I really enjoyed our visit and will plan to do this again the next time I am in the Iowa City area. And actually, I have some plans "in the works" that would mean I would make a trip to Iowa City just for quilty fun so I'll keep you posted.
My sister, Judy, and my mom, arrived as we were finishing our lunch. They had lunch earlier to give my mom some time to rest. Judy had a fun afternoon planned and rest was definitely needed. I'll tell you all about our afternoon in my next post. First, though, a little intro to what the afternoon held...........
We stopped here at the Kalona Cheese factory. Yummy cheese curds here!
And then we were on the road again and headed here............
And that's where I'll start my next post as oh, what wonderful things we saw in the Quilt & Textile Museum. And speaking of textiles............
Do you wish that perhaps you had been able to visit Inspirations Quilt Shop and buy a little fabric? Well, I was thinking of you, my readers, when I was there and I bought these.......
They are fat-eighths of some pretty fabrics by Andover and you could win them. Just tell me how long the drive would be if you had to get to Inspirations Quilt Shop. I'll save you the trip and on Sunday at 6:00 p.m., I'll draw a winning name.
One last thing......I got home to Minnesota and realized I liked these fabrics so much that I wanted to make candlemat with them. Oh, but I had bought them to give away so I couldn't keep them. What to do? I e-mailed Nancy and ordered up some more for me. And when I took my lunch break after finishing my previous post, they were in my mailbox today! How's that for service? Certainly easier than a 14 hour round trip that it would normally take to get to the shop. :-)  I'm going off to play with my fabrics now and you just need to leave that comment for your chance to win. Make sure you leave your e-mail or have your profile set to allow e-mail contact. If I draw your name but cannot contact you, I will have to draw another winner.
See you tomorrow with our visit to the Kalona museum..........
Sandi

Winning name has been drawn and as soon as I get a reply to my e-mail from Debbie, I will send her fabrics on their way to her door! And she has replied! The winner of the fabrics is Debbie M at Designs*by*Debbie*and*Dixie, too!.

How long to get to Inspirations? According to yahoo, 4 hours and 4 minutes. But you have to stop at Clear Lake for a cuppa, and Elk Run for a nature break, and any antique stores and/or quilt shops you see that are open, so I'm guessing5 - 6 hours. (Depends who's driving - my husband stops for everything!) See the light of a train - let's stop and watch it pass...

It would take me about 4 hours or maybe a little longer, if I stopped in Iowa City to see my granddaughter. Love the fabrics and so glad that you got some to keep!!

Well, let's see....if it takes you 14 hours, I'm about an hour and a half further, so it would be 15 1/2 hours for me!

I like your style, Marilyn. I love those stops enroute to somewhere that are often as good as the destination. LOL!

Oh, my! It would be a trip of 889 miles for me!! Google says over 15 hours! Wow! Looks like you had a lovely time, and a wonderful lunch! Love the quilt hanging in the bakery!
Thanks for the chance to win!

It would take me a very long time (don't know how long) as I live in Australia! Looks like a lovely shop though. Maybe one day I'll get there.

Gasp! Gorgeous quilt! ..and pretty fabrics. How thoughtful of you to think of your readers.

According to Mapquest, It would take me about 19 hours to get there so a visit is probably not in my future anytime soon.

Wow, Google Maps tells me it is 1,143 miles from my house to the shop taking 19 hours and 8 minutes. That's one way. Maybe on my next trip through Iowa to Illinois I can make plans to visit. It sure sounds like it would be worth the trip to stop for lunch and then check out the quilt shop.

I believe it would take me "two sleeps" to get there (which translates to two nights in hotels). LOL That place where you ate lunch looks so nice and what fun to have it be right by the quilt shop (and owned by a family member, too).

It's 1900 miles for me, 1 day and 6 hours! Don't think I'll make it...

What a fun day -- I've been enjoying your adventures! :)

According to Yahoo, about 3 hours. But, like Marilyn, we have to 'stop and smell the roses'! The only reason I pass a quilt shop is because it is closed. So I'm guessing it will take 6 or 7 hours. Inspirations is on my list for the next time I am in the Iowa City area! ~Jeanne

It would take me 21 1/2 hours. And that is almost the same distance we drove to Kansas last month :-) Whew, I'm tired just thinking of that drive again! Thanks for the fun post and the giveaway.

Well, it all depends on who is doing the driving.. me or DH??? Much quicker ride if DH is doing the driving. It would take us about 17 hours, depending upon the potty stops, gas pit stops etc. BUT, DH can do it in about 16 or less.. lead foot!!!

It would take me about the same time it took you which is 4 hour & 41 minutes or 284.97 miles. Really a long way for me. I would love to just twich my nose and be there in an instant. Inspirations looks fabulous.

If I left my home in Colorado very very early in the morning I would have to spend the night in eastern Nebraska and then drive on the next morning. I guess I would say 20 hours or more. I'm sure it would be worth the trip and the stops along the way at antique stores and flea markets would make the trip home very enjoyable.

Days of driving, I am sure! I found an awesome shop in San Diego this past weekend and thought how often I might need to made the trip for inspiration myself.

My brother and his wife are back there now visiting family and I am insanely jealous.

Sandi Linn Andersen said...

Phyllis, It might take you longer than 20 hours because if you are coming through Nebraska you might want to spend a night in Lincoln and see visit the quilt museum there. At least, I think it's in Lincoln. Plus there are a couple great shops in Nebraska that I'd stop at if I were coming that way. LOL!

Oh wow! I googled that and it would be 17 and half hours from Hope Mills NC. 1,006 miles! I am ever so glad that you picked up the fabric while you were there hehehe! Thanks for the chance win such pretty fabric and for sharing about the lovely shop and bakery! I know for sure if I'm ever out that way I would stop in and be inspired, a lot ;o) Sarah

A quilt shop and a bakery, what great idea. I often wished my LQS situated on the river had a little corner table where one could drink a cuppa while admiring the river view and contemplating quilt patterns and colors. Sometimes I'm just too weary and need to sit down in order to make up my mind.

Now if I were to drive out to Inspirations, I would get really, really weary, indeed, because I live on the west coast. Too many miles away. Ok, I'm curious, so I looked it up... 1897.4 miles/27.5 hours. Hmmm, I wonder if MapQuest takes into account driving through all those high mountain ranges. Thank you for all the nice photos! :-)

From Allentown, PA, it's 15.5 hours to Hills Iowa. I almost passed by there this summer on our cross country trip. However, the flooding caused us to take a more northern route, causing me to miss the museum in Lincoln, NE, and all of Iowa. Looks like some good Jo Morton you are giving away. One of my favorites. What an awesome day!! I'd love to go to that shop, but since I'm in PA, I think it will be a long time until I pass through. :( Thanks for sharing the wonderful pictures of the shop.

Oh would I love to visit Iowa but 16 hours and 41 minutes and 1055 miles is too much for me. I used to love to drive but not anymore. This sounds like a lovely place!!

It would be around 2000 miles I think. It would take at least four days. I'm not likely to get there anytime soon.

I am not sure if my first comment went through so I will try again! It would take almost 7 hours to get there from my house but it looks like it would be fun! Thanks for sharing your adventure.

O my, I first should drive 3 hours to the airport of Amsterdam - then take a flight to USA - hire a car and drive a long way - so winning this giveaway would make it so much easier to get hold of these wonderful fabrics!
Thanks for the chance to win.

Awesome pictures - you guys had fun! According to Google Maps it would take me 9 hours and 45 minutes! While I would LOVE to go, thanks for saving me the trip!

Mapquest says 328.25 mi. in 5 hr. 4 min., but we would take longer with stops to eat, refuel, check out quilt shops, etc. I have been hoping for a trip to Pella for the tulip festival next spring. My DH has retired now, so I want to go places and do things.
Whooo could pass up that much fun? Not me,

What a fun day. Iowa City is about 4 hours from me. Now to find time for a day trip or overnight. What pretty fabrics you found. Nice fast service, too.

Well, the straight line distance between Kenai, AK and Kalona IA is approximately 2781 miles or 4475 kilometers - so, I guess it would take me around 6-7 days - I sure hope somebody saves me dessert!!

Jen said...

Wow! I am 1835 miles, or 1 day and 5 hours away! That would be a long roadtrip, especially if I had to keep stopping for fabric! Thanks for sharing your trip with us! I especially love the thread cabinets from the museum. I would love to have one of those!
