No chocolates here.....

and that is A-okay! I do love chocolate but I was not looking for chocolate for Valentine's Day this year. Instead, I got a phone for Valentine's Day and I like that even better! I wasn't expecting it so it came as a nice surprise. ;-) And what did I surprise my husband with.....well, I made this.......
It's his very own personal giant sized placemat/mug rug just for watching NASCAR races. You see, at this time of year, while I am thinking Valentines Day, all his thoughts are on the upcoming NASCAR race at Daytona for the season opener. And so, he usually buys chocolates just because that's all he can come up with but I told him last year.....no more chocolates, please put some thought into this one day of the year. He's not a flower man so that's not gonna happen at our house. And I gave only one tiny hint about Valentines Day a couple weeks ago so I was impressed that he remembered the day and that he remembered not to buy chocolates. :-)
I really was so surprised by the phone gift and he was surprised by the placemat. He was worried "what if I spill something on it and ruin it". I told him......"it's meant to be washed!" It's just made from the scraps that were left from the NASCAR themed quilt top I made for him in 2005. Having that top quilted was his Christmas gift this past December. And now, it's all finished and I'll be picking it up on Friday. I think I can get the binding on so it's finished by the start of the race. Photos will follow when it's finished. :-)
So, will you be watching the big race on Sunday? I'll sort of watch but I'll be more interested in the sewing project I plan to work on while those cars go around and around the track....... :-)

What an adorable placemat. I know you DH will love it, I know mine would as he is a big fan of the late #3 Dale. Did you get a chance to see the quilt I made last week for DH honoring Dale Earnhardt?

With a title like that, I almost didn't click in to read the post! Why bother if there's no chocolate!

Great gifts you two exchanged! I love that little mug rug you made for him. Please tell me all those black and white squares were printed on the fabric and not actually pieced.

Now back to my chocolates!

That is really a cute idea. Dave likes those races too. I can't figure it out either. You're funny.

Sweet gifts for you and hubby.
I was without Mr. Romance this year...instead I had my newborn granddaughter and her three siblings to give me kisses.

Nice gifts for both of you! Actually, since we have studied NASCAR (the science of it and what it takes to concentrate and drive at such high speeds), we are fans of it and we will be watching. It takes so much physical endurance and a tremendous amount of mental concentration and is not an easy sport. With all other sports, participants get breaks, but drivers in NASCAR rarely get any kind of break......15 seconds for a pit stop is hardly time enough to catch your breath!!! LOL

Love your super size mug rug:0) Oh yes, the race will be on in Hope Mills, NC hehe! It's been a topic of conversation for my husband too. Not so much for me but I don't mind having it as back ground noisy ;) Sarah

I look forward to seeing the finished quilt. The longer you're with someone, the harder it is to find a gift that feels good, let alone one that surprises! That was a great choice for both of you.
