Chocolate Mayonnaise Cake!

I just had to share this with you...........

yummy chocolate cake ...... but not just any chocolate cake ........ it's Chocolate Mayonnaise Cake. My mother used to make this when we were kids and it was good when it was baked and frosted but even better was licking the bowl!! Would you like the recipe? Got it right here .......... written on a recipe card about 1970 so it's got dots of chocolate on it and at some point, the ink got wet so I can barely read the amount of cocoa but it's there ............. and so here you go .........

Chocolate Mayonnaise Cake

Sift 3 times
1/2 cup cocoa
2 cups flour
1-1/2 teaspoons baking soda

Then add.......
1 cup sugar
1 cup cold water
3/4 cup salad dressing (mayonnaise or Miracle Whip,
either one will do)
1 teaspoon vanilla

That's it! Mix it all together and pour into a 9 x 13 pan and bake about 25 minutes at 350 degrees. Bake time may depend on your oven.

You can make fudge frosting or use Pillsbury's Fudge frosting and spread it all over the top,
then melt some vanilla frosting to drizzle on top.

Tastes great with ice cream and double-great if you add peanuts, too.

I served this up at Bible Study yesterday with the ice cream and nuts. It's been several weeks since I joined the group and it was time I hosted at my house. We had an interesting lesson on Martha and Mary that I think I will post about at a later time. I enjoy the Bible study group and always come away feeling refreshed, reflective, rejuvenated. There ya go, a new set of "the three R's"!
More later.

I remember my mother making this back in the 60's - so good and so moist. I have many of her old handwritten, food stained recipe cards - such good memories.

I am saving the cake recipe into my online recipe book. It looks so yummy. I will wait until we are having guests to make it. I have lost 35 stubborn pounds since late July in 2008, and I don't want to risk gaining any of it back. I inherited my mother's metabolism: She didn't have to eat rich food. If she just looked at it, it would glom right onto her hips. We will have cake, and I will try some on an occasion where there will not be any cake left, maybe for the big family Independence Day picnic.

I know that your Bible study group feels that they benefit from your spirit, optimism, and willing to work for the less fortunate. Now that they have tried your baking, they will skip president and nominate you for QUEEN or at CHIEF CHEF.

See how great 60 can be. I am 61, and it's even better.

How I love mayonnaise cake. It was my favorite aunt's recipe so I always think of her when I make it(along with snickerdoodles!). I never ice my cake though since I think it is just perfect as is! I sprinkle a little 10X sugar over it(if I am ambitious, I use a doily so there is a pretty pattern on top of the cake!)

Thanks for the memories!

Oh the memories this cake stirs up. Went on a picnic when a teen and this cake was served. Everyione ate and praised the maker for the good cake. She stated that it contained mayonnaise. Oh goodness, one of the other girls detested mayo in any form and she promptly did something that had us all holding our stomaches. I won't say what, it might ruin your taste for this cake. I still like it though. Sarahe4e

We used to make this. It rivals today's pudding cakes for sure. People thought it was weird but it is one of the moistest cakes ever!
