My One Year Blog Anniversary - Day 2!

Well, it's Day 2 and time to let you know what the next prize is in my blog anniversary celebration. First I have to say "Thank you" for all the comments and thoughts you shared in the Day 1 celebration post. I enjoyed reading every one of them!!
Once again Brown Bear is assisting and he is really liking this giveaway. There are 56 flannel rectangles (6 1/2" x 9 1/2") that you can use for a comfy lap quilt to keep you warm come winter. Now I realize that for most of us, it's summer but if you put these squares in your "to do" pile and then maybe get to them in a couple of months.......well, you might finish the quilt just in time for cold weather! :-) Brown Bear is thinking this would make a great quilt for winter hibernation!!

Along with the quilt squares, there's a little Mary E journal where you can keep track of projects on your "to do" list. So, why send you flannel squares at this time of year? Well, as noted, sometimes fabric has to come and live with us while we work on other projects. I just want you to be ready for winter when it comes. :-)

I love the feel of good quality flannel and love to snuggle down in flannel sheets. Not everybody loves the feel of flannel sheets but for me, it goes back to when I was a young girl and there were yellow flannel sheets on our twin beds. My sister and I shared a room and we had these twin beds that were black wrought iron, very 1950's. :-) My sister's bed was in the corner of the room opposite the door and my bed was tucked by the closet and under the window. The window faced out to the backyard and I could see up the hill behind our house. There was a street light up there along the paved road that came into Lehigh (Iowa where I grew up) from the east. It was just about where the "Castle" is located, a beautiful old brick home and my parents lived in the apartment on the third floor when I was just a tiny baby. I always went to bed comforted by the "nightlight" that the streetlight provided when I snuggled down on those yellow flannel sheets. It's one of those good memories that can make me happy when I am sad. So with happy thoughts in mind, I took some favorite flannel fabrics and made a quilt (yes, I know it's not really a quilt but calling it a blanket just doesn't sound right). I was in a Yahoo group called "One Stitch at a Time" and they were having this challenge thing to make a project or something like that. There are so many quilters out there who make these fantastic quilts but with all the health issues for my parents and our move into our new house, I didn't have time to cut and piece anything intricate. I was happy just to sew the rectangles together into a quilt top and then I backed it with fleece and added a binding of fleece, too. That's what I am doing in the picture. I was in a hurry to finish the quilt because we had this "cold-air" issue in my sewing room and I needed the warmth to sew or be at the computer. That problem has since been solved but I use this quilt all the time. It is super comfortable and it's plenty long enough to cover me from head to toe!!!

The 56 rectangles in this prize are cut from some really pretty fall flannels that I purchased at local quilt shops. They are all washed and ready for you to stitch into your own comfy quilt. All you have to do is leave a comment and this time, tell me about a favorite quilt memory. I have many favorite quilt memories and I'm sure you do, too, so I'll bet you can share at least one.
You can add comments on this post through June 10th and winner will be announced on June 14th.
Have a good night and I'll see you tomorrow with another prize!
Sandi

One of mine is a lap quilt I recently finished. It started out as a general Mardi Gras challenge using the colors purple, green and orange. Any medium, any craft. I made a few scrap blocks. After the challenge I decided to use a few more scrap blocks and 2 different grape materials and made a lap quilt for my son in laws birthday. I called it the grapes of Mardi Gras,LOL!

Oh Sandi, your flannel quilt looks so cozy. I really need to make one, I am so cold natured.

I have so many fond memories of quilts but I think my favorite one is a Christmas Quilt which I had made several years ago, a star sampler, each star in gold, with alternate red and green Christmas print background and sashed with tea dyed muslin with tiny holly leaves. It was surrounded with a border of holly with Santa's and Noel, Noel, Noel all around. I really enjoyed using this quilt each Christmas and finally last Christmas I made a matching pillow. My youngest daughter had always admired this quilt so much, she said it was her favorite of all the quilts I had made, so I gifted the quilt and pillow to her the week before Christmas so she would have it to use on her bed for Christmas. She was so surprised and thrilled to receive it. I know it will bring her much joy as I had.

We didn't have any hand made quilts when I was growing up. We had basic store bought blankets. Now I know how much we missed out on.

My daughter was given a small quilt when she was born. She dragged that thing around until there was nothing left to it :)

Love the flannel squares! My Mom before she passed made a quilt for each of her daughters -4 and each of her Grandchildren--13. At that time I didn't quilt and never realized the work put into each one. Sad to say my kids --5 used and abused theirs till there was nothing left. They were tied and not as sturdy as the machine quilted ones that came later. My sister has 3 she found in a bag as she was cleaning out her attic, and she asked me to see what I could do with them. Well its a real challenge and I enjoy a challenge so One is done, and off to Texas and it made a Grown Man cry! I will get to the other two, soon!!!!!

Wow another great prize Sandi!! I really don't have one great quilt story. Since I hand piece/quilt all of my quilts, each one is very special to me. As I make each quilt I spend hours thinking of the person I'm making the quilt for, most thoughts make me smile, a few bring tears to my eyes...but all of it is good....

Sadly, I don't have any quilt memories going back very far.....as I believe our family had NO quilts at all and my family members weren't into quilting. BUT....I have the memory of the time I got a quilt back from a long-armer......it was the only quilt I've been able to have professionally quilted and I was SO happy and proud of that quilt (and still am). I also have a happy memory of a raggy seamed flannel quilt I made for hubby and he uses it on a regular basis at night watching TV. So...now I'd love to make a flannel one for ME.

Your quilt is so pretty - my favorite quilt memory is a quilt I made for my grandson - I made it from the receiving blankets that were my son's when he was a baby. I thought it would be nice for my grandson to have something that was once his dad's. The blankets had been washed many times so the flannel was soft and comfy.

Oh I love flannel! This would be a good one to win!

I remember the first quilt I saw my mother assemble. It was huge because my parents had a king size bed, but nothing fancy. Just two king size sheets with batting between and tied...lots and lots of tying! It looked so puffy and cozy on their bed!

My favorite Quilt Memory is not one I made but one my Grandmother made for me. I remember sleeping under it as a child and feeling so safe. I think it has a heavy wool type blanket as a batting. It's heavy!

I still have it in my closet and every time I look at it I remember my grandmother.

favorite memory -
My grandson sleeps every night with the quilt I made him as a baby (he is now 6), BUT it must be layered in the correct order. First Jackson lays down, then BaaBaa quilt (it has sheep on it),then his sheet, then blanket. He will tell you if they are in the wrong order!! LOL The binding is fraying from so much use and I need to replace that this summer...

That's a lovely flannel quilt, and I've been meaning to make one for myself but haven't gotten to it yet. Made one for hubby for a birthday 2 years back out of some of his flannel shirts and others from the thrift store. I made it for his 'headache' days which he gets quite often. He thought it was silly to have his own quilt, but boy he does like it when his headaches come on...he doesn't have to undress, just plops on the bed and covers up with it....I didn't add batting, just front and back...anyway, back to my memory of a quilt. I only have one of quilts my grandma made for eash of us, that my mother stored in a closet and we were not allowed to use them...they were for when we married I guess. So, I loved the colors on white that I saw, for she made all scrappy style quilts. When dad got sick and they needed tomove to a warmer climate they put the house contents all up for auction. I was about 19 at the time, I nabbed the two nicest quilts and took them home. I should have grabbed them all, but in my innocentcy, the shabby ones looked shabby to me...I didn't appreciate the 'value' of a handmade quilt, knew nothing of them, OHHHH but I do now. I regret not getting ahold of the wedding ring quilt to this day! I have used these quilts over the years, and now I keep one hanging almost year round just to show. THey aren't relegated to a closet to never be seen or toughed. Grandma would have wanted it this way! Sorry to have this so long!

Sandi, I have been thinking about my favorite quilting story. I guess mine is from this past Christmas. We have 4 grandchildren. I decided to make each of them a quilt for Christmas. I got all of them done, but Ava's. Her quilt had lots of pink hearts and lots of quilting. I had the flu just before Christmas and just couldn't get it done. She wasn't quite 3, so I figured she wouldn't notice if I showed it to her on Christmas morning, then took it back home to finish. Wrong! Every night when she would go to bed she would ask for her pink 'blanket'. Our daughter told her I was putting some more 'love' in it. (All hand quilted.) Well, let me tell you, I worked long hours and got it done about a week after Christmas. I mailed it to her. Our daugher said when the box came, and she opened it, she squealed with delight and wrapped it around herself. She had her pink 'blanket'. LOL She sleeps with it every night. Sorry for such a long story, but I am long winded. LOL Winona

Sandi--You can come up with some good questions!! You brought out a lot of memories with this one too! I also love flannel and sleep with flannel sheets year round. My memory of a Quilt is one my mother made of sewing 2 widths of pink flannel together for 1 side and blue for the other and tied it. I still have it and the 2 granddaughters fight over who sleeps with it when they visit, so did kind of the same thing for them this last Christmas in their favorite color.
Love the feel of used flannel and collected nightgowns and flannel pajamas as thrift stores a few years ago, cut them into squares, with a rag quilt in mind, which is not my thing I found out! Now have a large tote with squares already cut from them. Anyway am now in the process of making a suduko quilt out of some of them. Can't wait for tomorrows question!!!

My fraternal Grandmother was a hand quilter, but she passed when I was just a child, so I did not get to learn anything from her. I have 2 of her quilts, one is worn and shabby, but still love it. The other is a cathedral window with pillow cover and is just gorgeous. Thank you for having a give-a-way, the fabrics are so pretty!

There were always chenille bedspreads on our beds when I was growing up in the 1950's, but when we visited my aunt in our family's hometown there were always quilts to cuddle up with when the cousins all slept together upstairs. Later I learned that my Mum had 2 of her mum's quilts tucked away in her closet. They came to me when she passed away and I treasure them to this day. Never having known that grandmother, I love to run my fingers over her stitches. I like to think I inherited some of her quilting and stitching talent.

Back when I was first married, my Mom was staying with me and the kids while my husband was in the hospital for back surgery. She decided she wanted to make a quilt out of some old dresses and coats she had. I agreed to help her do some of the sewing on the top. We laughed until we cried some day's working on that quilt. About the 4th day into working on it, I had a mishap...I somehow got my finger under the needle, it went into the nail and out the top of my finger. My mom totally panicked, while I stayed calm enough to get my finger out. She didn't want to finish the quilt, but I convinced her we could. It is one of my fondest memories of working on something with my mother..she is gone now, but I will never forget that project and I have the quilt.

I love flannel! And I, too, think patchwork is a quilt! And it takes a great deal of talent to make one turn out so beautiful!
I made a queen size patchwork for my daughter 32 years ago. She still has it. I made the pattern myself. It is southern belles with big sunbonnets in different fabrics with names embroidered on them.

My quilt memories begin when I was an adult and had not long arrived in Canada from England. I was invited to a quilting bee with some ladies from church. I caught the bug that day but didn't make my 1st quilt until a year or so later, and now I've been quilting for more than 30 years.

My best quilt memory is learning how to quilt and taking classes from you Sandi. And the best part is meeting you and having you as a friend. I loved making a quilt for my mother that I know she will cherish always. It was purple which is her favorite color

I grew up with knitted and crocheted afghans, not quilts. I think this is part of what led me to quilting, actually. (Don't get me wrong, I love the afghans, too!) My favorite quilt memory is not actually *my* memory, it's a story I heard at my Great-Grandmother's funeral.

G'G'ma was a breast cancer survivor, so she wore a prothesis. She was a beautiful needleworker and apparently did hand quilt, but only did so as part of her church's quilting bee. She would gather regularly to help quilt charity (I think) quilts with the bee, and of course there were occasional new members. Whenever a newbie joined them, G'G'ma would wait until the new member was watching, and then, very calmly and deliberately, use her prothesis as a pincushion -- without, of course, explaining at all! G'G'ma had a wicked sense of humor!!

My favorite quilt story is that while I quilt by hand, I pray over the quilt for the well being of the child to recieve the item. I firmly believe from hearing of babies born with difficulties who had my quilts, overcoming their problems. I think those prayers make a difference. Sarah

Hi Sandi
I don't think I have any memories of hand made quilts but I do have a few favourite hand made blankets which my Grandmother and maybe my Great Aunt made me many many years ago when I was a little girl, and I still have them all! They are all crocheted, granny square style blankets - one is single bed size, black background with lots of bright colours in the centers, and then there is a cot size blanket (for when I was a baby!) with a yellow background and different colours in the centres and then there is a pink and white one which was made for me as a doll cot blanket with gorgeous three dimensional crocheted flowers on it.
Now you've inspired me to go and blog about them, as they are lovely blankets containing lots of work, talent and love! I'll just have to wait for the camera to come home so I can take some photos.

Flannel, yummy! My first machine quilt was made of flannel using a freezer paper pattern. The fabrics are of dogs and cats and I hade it quilted by a long arm quilter in the area. I don't know why I haven't used flannel since then but this give away would be perfect to get me started on another one!

When we would go visit my grandma in a tiny southern minnesota town I would love to go into her extra room where her quilt frame was set up. there was always something very pretty and always scrappy being quilted. She started a tradition of giving each of the grandchildren a quilt for their high school graduation. Now that she is gone, my sisters and I have continued that traditon by making what would be her great grandhchildren graduation quilts.

My bestest quilting experice was when I attened my first Quilt Show. I lived in a very small town of about 500 up in the mountains. Not much in the line of quilting stores there. I attened the Pacific International Quilt Show in No. Calif. My eyes were as wide as half dollars. I just couldn't believe how much quilting was out there. Good thing I had a hotel for 3 days and I still didn't get to see everything. From fabric to the lovely quilts people created. It was an eye opener for me and yes, I'm hooked! I hope to attend again this year, god willing.

Sandi, thank you for giving away such wonderful gifts for your blogiversary and for bringing back so many memories. This story I don't really remember myself, but my mother liked to tell it. She belonged to a group of quilters who would hand quilt to raise money for a club of which they were all members. She was the only one with a preschool child, but she took me with her every week with strict instructions about my behavior. One week I asked to quilt. They were quilting for a member of the group instead of a customer, and she laughed and told my mother to let me quilt. I didn't make many stitches before getting bored and skipping off to do something else. My mother sat down at my spot and got ready to take out my stitches. The quilt owner asked her to please leave that baby's stitches alone because they would hold a special memory for her.

I LOVE flannel sheets. I actually have several sets that I alternate through. Very comfy and snuggly. Fortunately the hubby likes them too or he'd be in trouble!

I am an old sewer (sounds bad, but seamstress works too) but I am fairly new to quilting. So I don't really have any quilting memories, yet. Although I did have all of our guests sign premade quilt blocks at our wedding reception last fall that I will slowly be piecing into a quilted wall hanging. I'm rather excited about having our "guest book" on display like that.

I would love to win those gorgeous blocks. Such lovely fall colors. I can imagine a snuggly throw..

I know it's unfashionable for someone my age (early 30s) to love flannel but I do! I'm not a quilter (more a sewer of softies and bags and other small items) so the closest I have to a firstj "quilt" memory was when I first saw a crocheted "granny square" lap rug about 20 years ago. I'd never seen anything like that and my whole family just loved it.

The flannel squares in your giveaway are great. I'd love to be entered in your drawing. Thanks.

My best memory but may be the saddest when my youngest child was only 1 my mother had a heart attack and was very ill. So while she was recuperating I made her a scrap quilt in all of the materials that were left from her grandchildren's quilts. Unfortunately she died within the first four weeks of the initial heart attack. But what make the memory so happy was I had her quilt at the funeral draped over her coffin and our little girl got up and was walking around the coffin. This was the first time she had walked without holding our hands. Every day in those last few weeks my Mum would ask If Gabrielle was walking and Gabrielle got up to show her Nana she was walking now

My favorite quilt memory is the quilt I made for my son's 1st grade teacher 6 years ago. It was my first quilt and I secretly traced the hand of each child in the class with the help of the music teacher. I then appliquéd each of the handprints and embroidered the child's name under it. The center square was a class photo that was taken for the yearbook. On the center square I embroidered the teachers name, the school & school year. When my son presented her with the quilt she was so surprised and pleased that she had tears in her eyes. My son was so very proud to receive her hugs.
